Tucked between the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountain ranges, the Klein Karoo is a semi-arid valley rich in character and contrast.

This atmospheric region blends wide horizons, red-earth plains, dramatic passes, and hidden pockets of wildlife. It’s home to quirky country towns like Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp, famous for their ostrich farms, rock art, wine routes, and warm hospitality.

The Klein Karoo also hosts a number of remarkable wilderness retreats—including Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, which offers Big Five sightings and luxurious, low-impact lodging in one of South Africa’s most striking landscapes. The region pairs beautifully with the Garden Route, Winelands, or Route 62, offering a slower-paced, soul-stirring contrast to coastal or city travel.
